My son, Bert, graduated Rutgers last week (computer science and linguistics majors) and starts working for Brown Brothers Harriman Bank in Jersey City next week. He and two of his friends have rented an apartment right in the center of Hoboken. Emily is just finishing her third year of Lutheran seminary as an intern in very rural Ford City, PA, which is about 40 miles NE from Pittsburgh. She has one more academic year in Columbia South Carolina. Ellen works for TIAA CREF in NYC, but after a year of keeping track of teacher pensions she is looking at going back into teaching instead. I've been working at ADP on Jefferson Road in Parsippany for almost two years now.

Here's a quick recap of the 40th reunion. First a heart felt thanks to Art and Janis for putting up with us...it was gratefully appreciated by all. And thanks again to Chuck Metter for his time and effort in providing some really great music from those days. For those who have not been back to Mt Lakes recently, it really is still a beautiful town....basically unchanged for the last umteen years. A bit pricy though....average house probably goes for $800,000 or so....taxes on a half acre on Crystal Lake was $18,000 a year and the Mt Lakes Market (Yak's)is serving a "golden pecan coffee" The high school has a weight/massage room for any and all "jocks"...both male and female Oh...man...what would Mr Napp or Mr Seibert have said 50 years ago? The day of the reunion was beautiful....mid 80's with sun and a little cool in the evenning which helped with the bugs. There were somewhere between 25 - 35 people at one time or another. Steve and Tom flew in from France...Johnny Balwin from Italy with his family and Jeff too. People came from Colorado...Minnesota...California...probably a good half dozen states in all. It was a real nice time. Nothing loud or crazy....just a lot of quiet conversations with and among old friends....a real nice time! The next reunion is already scheduled for two years from now...July 4th, 2009 will be on a Saturday so it should make it easier next time around Take Care

It is great that you guys and gals are going to get together for the sake of Mountain Lakes days. Those days have a special place on my dendrites that give me special pleasure whenever they activate. Even though you had to cope with me for only a year, that year holds a very special place in me. well....Tate had to bear with me 24-7. You guys are part of me Carlos

well, the reunion is back on at Art Mahoney's house on Monday, July 2, 2007. The price is $20.00 a head. About 20 - 25 people will be there so far and if interested, it's important to let Art know ahead of time...makes planning for the food and drink a lot easier. You can pay at the door or send a check in the mail. Directions and time will be made available later. You can contact me at the email below or directly to Art at Art.Mahoney@ricoh-usa.com. Hope to see a lot of people there

Classmates Well, we certainly had a flurry of activity after the possible postponement notice and it was encouraging. This coming Monday, Yvonne, Bill and I are going to set down, take a hard look at all of the information and decide if the recent upsurge in enough. Here's Yvonne's address once again for anyone who still hasn't sent a check in.....73 Minehan Lane, Marlboro, Ma 01752. Yvonne, Bill and I enjoy hosting these reunions....it's fun....very satisfying and it's always good to see old friends, especially the older you get. Here's the big dilemma from our point of view...(.we, the three of us) don't want to get 'stiffed" for the dinner at the club. Here 'a quick peek at an unpleasant side of a reunion. We need to order X amount of dinners and unless someone actually tells us who's going to show and more important...sends the money, there's no way to know. Intentions are good but if someone doesn't show, the meal still has to be paid for. Eventually we get a firm number....maybe add a few for last minute drop ins. The problem are "drop-ins and Mt Lakers, not from the classes of '66 and 67 and people from both groups will show up. The drop in classmates all have good intentions about paying, but they walk in...see old friends.....couple of huggs....a few "oh my Gods"......couple of kisses on the cheek (the upper cheek. please),,,....have a few drinks...enjoy themselves and "my goddess....here comes the dinner", ...no one around to ask for the money and somehow the money doesn't get paid. The non classmates or friends of classmates will state (honorable and mean it) that "they're not going to eat...just have a few drinks at the cash bar and circulate" The problem is that at some point, they'll sit at one of the tables and here comes the waitress, asking what they want for dinner. They think to themselves..."well, this is a bit of all right , i wasn't going to but now I will."..and give their order for dinner. The idea of one of us, walking from table to table....trying to wrestle food from someone's mouth and at the same time screaming in his face "where's the money Mo..Fu" is not anyone's idea of a good time. In the past, we had a secret weapon in the form of Beth L.....she would have a list of people who had paid and who had not and without mercy or remorse....endlessly....never ceasing.....tirelessly...walking about and made sure that everyone she saw had paid. But Beth's not going to be here for this one. Here's a disaster we're trying to avoid....toward the end of the evening....just at the coffee and cigars are coming out, the kitchen manager will approach one of us (usually Yvonne...poor kid) and say "OK, you've paid tor 35 meals, but we've served 50. At $80.00 per meal, that would be an extra $1,200.00....will that be a check, cash or a credit card, Mr Petry (please God make it be Bill). I've tried to make this email informative and with a dash of good natured humor, but the point here has serious consequences for us and you can be certain this will be going through our minds. Without fail, for every reunion, we end up paying some money out of our pockets at the end of the evening. And this year, we don't have our secret weapon....Beth..If we have the numbers to go forward, we'd appreciate it if, you haven't paid by the time you reach the door, ....look one of us and fork it over.....greatly appreciated. We'll be in touch the middle of next week John, Yvonne, and Bill PS FYI, I get a lot of the credit becuase I'm handling the web site and emails but as we all know, with every function there is a lot of ugly behind the scenes scut work that has to be done and done well or it's a real disaster looming. For every hour I put in, both Yvonne and Bill have put in equal time and then some. For the last reunion, they both made three seperate trips from Boston to Mt Lakes for the sole purpose of reunion work and that's a 6 hour round trip and they did it three times.

So sorry to miss the reunion this year. I will be in Mt. Lakes 2 weeks beforehand. My parents are aging. They retired from their clinic in Dover, now named the Zufall Health Center in their honor. Dad is physically slower. Mom is developing dementia. My younger sibs are all well with assorted kids growing up. My 3 sons are: a new PhD in engineering; a computer job in Seattle; getting back to Stanford after a year off for personal problems. I am recently happily divorced. Love my doctor job, my violin, and many friends here. Do come visit if you are in Seattle.

Grettings from San Antonio, you guys! It was such fun to get this link this morning and read some of your messages. Saw one from Terry O'Brien...that had to be Tommy O'Brien's brother, right? He is famous to me for being my first boyfriend in kindergarten. Dianne Bedford and I both thought he was just the cutest thing ever. :-) He probably still is. Herb and I are still happily situated here in Texas. Kids pretty much grown and "replaced" at the moment by 5 dogs, including 2 Great Pyrenees. Herb is still traveling quite a bit. He's in South Africa on business this month. I'm still at Akin Gump, as Administrator for the local office of 45 attorneys. Even if the reunion is a no-go for this year, it's still fun to hear from everyone! Billy, I was very sad to hear about Garry's death. We all lived in each other's pockets as kids, didn't we? I think our moms still stay in touch in Florida. I heard from Scot West (now in Moscow!) recently. Amazing how many from Mt.Lakes have traveled very far on their adventures. Best wishes to all! Lin

Since I contacted John B. last week I've heard from John again, and received a short note from Mark Bobseine. For those of you who may not remember, I attended ML schools from Kindergarten through 8th grade. I went to Morris Catholic HS and then to Univ. of Notre Dame. My family lived at 5 Pollard Road (As Kevin already mentioned). Our family moved from ML to Panther Valley in 1969. I trying to talk my brother Tommy '66 into coming to next year's reunion with us. I am planning to make it. My wife Jane and I will probably combine this with a trip to visit her family. I really enjoyed reading the guest book. Because I remember many of our early classmates, I particularly enjoyed seeing the message from Cami Crocker. I certainly remember her; I believe that you lived on the corner of Midvale Ave. and Ball Road next to the Mahoneys. Is that right Cami? I think John should find out what happened to Paul Armstrong (moved away after 3rd??), Billy Morrison (moved away after 4th), Gary Smith (moved away to Santa Cruz, CA, after 6th - older brother Neal), and Candy Gilland moved away after 2nd). Good luck John. I'd like to add that I think that Gladys Rose made an excellent choice on her new first name. Best regards to everyone - Terry O'Brien

Geez....I don't believe I stumbled on this website! And, I actually remember most of you!! (well, at least names - I'll have to pull out my yearbook to connect names with faces. You all look the same, right?) I had one run in with Officer Castellucci. This girl in my class ('68) was babysitting and Dozer, Jerry Hak, and I went and paid her a visit. Damn people didn't lock up their liquor cabinet and we found out later that Dozer couldn't handle his booze. He ended up passing out on the side lawn, the neighbors called the cops, and Castellucci shows up and takes us home to our parents. We had to go to some "mock court" consisting of local parents where our penalty was to write a 500 word paper. My parents STILL remind me of that! My sister, Beverly, Class of '60, I think still lives in Morris Plains and keeps in touch with some of her classmates. One of them is President of Swisher, the cigar company. My brother Tom lives in Winston-Salem, NC and has 3 daughters. Both of our parents are alive and well living in Fernandina Beach, Florida. I took my wife to ML this past July to show her all of the sights - MLHS, Island Beach, ML Club, Del's Village, etc. We went by our old house on Wildwood Lake, and the couple who bought our house still live there! They let my wife and I take a canoe ride out on the lake and took us through the house. It was a wonderful visit. I've only been in contact with a few ML classmates all these years - Carolyn Conners, Bill Cronheim, and just a few days ago, Scott Rudel. I hope you all have a great reunion! Oh, and I can't believe Doug Wilkins is STILL the football coach there! He must be older than Joe Paterno.

Most of Mtn. Lakes is still in my head. Not as it is now..... but how it was 35 years ago. I can look at almost every foot of every street and and some view of almost every house any time I wish. I don't look often but the memories are the foundation of wnat came next. In many ways leaving was the best thing I ever did. I started over and reinvented myself. It was the best thing I ever felt. I will return next year to visit my roots. I look foward to visiting with the people who in their youth changed mine. Kip

What an enterprise! And how many names as alive today as ever. Did a little scouting in ML this past summer with Tate Preston, Fred Schruers, Steve McWilliams, Mark Bobseine and Kevin McCann, as well as communing with Hal Haydock and Bonnie McCall, and can report as others have that the town is still lush and green, and pretty white too... I hope to make the fiesta and touch bases with so many old friends and influences. Maybe my wife Chiyoko and my kids Kaizan (8), Miya (4) and Yuzan (4) will get a clearer picture of what makes their dad tick too. They may wonder, though, why I spent most of the last 30 years outside the US rather than in Mountain Lakes...

Moving into town at age ten, entering Mrs. Doland's 5th grade (aka wicked witch of east)..petrified..only Dago in town, save for Castelucci, our neighbor up behind Pocono..and then Cianci and Desposito ...thank god the Peters twins moved in and entered my life! for Mtn. Lakes, we were the "women of color!"...rather hysterical, when you consider that the rest of NJ is predominently Jewish and Italian...but not MtnLakes back in the '60's-70's...I had to contend with being called "spaghetti face"..and those crazy Irish boys, getting "twanged" in Catechism by Danny (where is dear Danny boy?...lost in Hawaii?)...Mahoney, Stephenson, Leckie, O'Brian, Kennedy, McCann..Bobby Oughletree you were adorable then and you're adorable now..Beth, Joan and Judy, Barb, meet me at the bus stop, bring some tequila. Hi there. Thanks to Christy and Bill, I found out about the reunion next July and I am definitely coming. It's been 25 years since I've been in New Jersey. I've been living and working in Copenhagen, Denmark the last 16 years and I'm "almost" making a living as a musician -- teaching piano and guitar to kids that go to the two international schools in Copenhagen (I teach privately in my home). I also play background music for private receptions when I can. I think it would be fun at the reunion to sing some old rock n roll songs (and maybe even some of the Fantastix). It's been a long time! Last March, I had the most interesting experience -- I played for Bill Clinton when he was in Denmark. Actually, I was part of the "pre-dinner entertainment" at the American ambassador's residence (no, really). Actually, I accompanied six of the ambassador's children who were my students, singing a hymn called Simple Gifts. My thirty seconds of fame! Anyway, I still don't have a computer in Denmark, but I am in Seattle now until Sunday, October 21st, at my son Bennett's apartment, so I can respond if you email me at this email address until Sunday afternoon. After that, he can relay any email messages he receives for me by phone once a week. His email is: bennett@peacefire.org. Hope to hear from you! Tina Peterson Haselton.

I can't believe it! After all these years I still recognize some names! My brother Larry and I moved from Mt. Lakes after the 6th grade - but still talk about Mt. Lakes once in awhile. It sure would be great to catch up with "old" friends! I will try my best to make the reunion. Where is Gail Hughes? I remember playing with our "ginny" dolls in her basement! I remember watermelon races at the Mt. Lakes Club and going there for lunch once in awhile from school. I remember sleding down Tower Hill Rd. Do they still do that? Probably not. Anyway, what a kick it is to think about all those times. Glad to hear from you John! ---

How about Mr. Waxman? Will he remember the day he declared an end to all acronyms and double entendres at MLHS (immediately endorsed by LIACOS and SPADE - society for the promotion of acronyms and double entendres). So we'll need to pull them all out again - LATHER - if the hoods are still mobile enough to move around, etc.,etc, etc. Or Jerry Foote? Just made a trip to ML in August for a pre-reunion warm-up with John Baldwin, Mark Bobseine, Steve McWilliams, Fred Schruers. I tried my best to get a one-day pass to Birchwood from the town hall, but an aging Laker who has moved...... Looking forward to the event.

My first Moutain Lakes love was Billy Morrison. It was kindergarten and Billy and I would hold hands whenever we got the chance to walk two-by-two. Then, oh woe, Billy moved away. I didn't mourn for too long because Larry Magnant sat in the row next to me in first grade. He always wore his baseball uniform and we all know he was beyond cute. Who wouldn't have a crush? My first kiss was Jules VonSternberg in the third grade. We went horseback riding for my third-grade birthday party and afterwards he slobbered on my check. ICH!! Fifth grade, I met up with Billy Morrison again. He'd moved to Rainbow Lakes and I went to part of fifth grade there. Alas, he'd found someone else. But, I was busy with my dancing school partner--Billy Gandenberger. At least I was until Gail Hughes started dancing with him. This caused me to lose interest in men. But, at my parents suggestion, I did have a sixth-grade, boy/girl, after-dancing-school, birthday party. Was it Buzy Simmons and Larry Magnant who found my father in the car and won the scavenger hunt? Then, men were out of the question. I got too fat. Miraculously, on turning 15, I lost all the weight. I also moved to Plymouth Meeting, Pennsylvania, and ran into...Peter Fredericks. Peter had been two years ahead of us at Moutain Lakes and had a sports car. Our first date was shortly after my 15th birthday, New Years Eve, 1965. After promising my mother to have me home at a "decent" hour, we entered his car. He asks, "Bud or Seagrams?" Paralyzation struck. I didn't know what he was talking about. From the back seat I hear, "She'll have a Bud." Thank God for older brothers. Yes, ole' eagle eye Skip, wasn't going to let anyone get his siter too drunk. Peter and I had an on-again, off-again, relationship until I went to college where I ran into Buzz Simmons and Peter Davies, my former next-door neighbor. All the girls in my dorm were in love with Buzz and none of them noticed Peter. (Sorry Peter.) After college I moved to New York City and started working in my first career--television production. Except for a very few Peter Hodges sailing run-into's via Skip, I lost contact with Mt. Lakes and its men. Until Johnny Barber suggested we write these tales ala' Tom Pope, my earliest romantic adventures were stored in ancient memory. Thanks John!

I stumbled on this web site and was pleasantly surprised to see my name among the Class of '67. I actually left Mountain Lakes (to go to Karachi, Pakistan) after seventh grade; however, a part of me always remained in Mountain Lakes. I have thought of so many of you over the years and wondered what happened to you. I look at the alumni list for 1967 and I vividly remember at least half of you from grade school. I see Doreen Dover, for instance, has just sent in a message before me!! What a blast from the past! Among other things, I am Californian now, an entomologist on the faculty at the University of California, Davis, as well as a mother of two boys, 11 & 17, a wife who kept her maiden name, and a bit of a sucker for nostalgia. I will peek at your web site from time to time.

Her mother said she always lived life to the fullest, never losing any of her "ebullience." She is survived by a daughter, Arianna, now age 16. Arianna Pelullo lives with her paternal grandparents near Philadelphia, but visits Mountain Lakes frequently and has many friends in town.

This is my first visit to your site. I ran thru a few of the guest book comments- Reminded me of passing notes in class. The only 2 Lakers that I have seen since 1966 are Denis Waldron and Ron Wright. My sister Jamie and my brother Patrick went to a reunions of their classes and enjoyed them. I would like to attend this upcoming one. I have been sick, so I'll have to see how my health is- it's a long way off yet. Has anyone seen Judy Reavis?

Here's a memory that you have to go way back for...farther....no, farther than that. Now that it's fall and the weather is getting colder, does anyone remember every Saturday morning, the Mountain Lakes High School Band prading down Lake Drive toward the football field and playing different college football songs? I can remember being about 10 years old and racing on foot beside them. Wild with Excitment! Hell, beside them? Actually I and my friends were running beside, in front of and behind. And, on occasion, dodging between the Twirlers and the band memebers. It's a wonder that they didn't all end up piled in a huge stack trying to avoid us.

Wow!! 35 years!! Will be nice to see everyone. I think My sister Bonnie will be attending as well. Dave Brodigan inquired about several people who have died. Ed Peabody did infact die several years ago. Seth Sleezer died in 1991 and Ron Rosler died in 1984. I tried to die but Heaven wouldn't have me and Hell was afraid they would have to take me, so I guess I'll be at the reunion. John Weidmann

I just looked at the reunion schedule. Would you believe we already have conflicts? My wife, Ellen Hill, plays violin and viola. Our children, Emily (going to Rutgers this fall) and Bert (sophomore at Clifton HS)also play violin and viola. And I have started playing percussion, especially glockenspiel, so I don't have to stay home alone on Thursdays. Ellen plays for the Ridgewood Symphony Orchestra and we all play for the Glen Rock Pops. July 3 we play a concert in Glen Rock and July 4 we play before the fireworks in Ridgefield Park. I hope that we will be able to join you at Birchwood. The Ridgewood Symphony also sponsors the Ridgewood Festival Strings, a program primarily for middle-school string players that also encourages high school players to assist. Not only have both my children been playing in the Festival Strings, but this past year Peggy Zufall was the business manager. I really wish we could join you at the Zufall house on the 4th. It's still a year away and things can change I'll keep checking back on the plans Peter Hartmann

Dear John, Yvonne, et al, It is still unclear whether I will be there next 4th of July, but the doubts exceed the certainties. As a "priesty-boy" and downwardly mobile, my funds will probably be going towards a closer vacation on the left coast. But you forwarded a message about Bob Deeble that brought back more than a few memories. I remember one mischief night about the 7th grade. Bob and I got the idea about throwing some eggs at cars from behind the cover of the long wall that went the length of his yard(can't even remember the street at the moment!) Anyway, we threw about 2 eggs when Bob's mother comes up from the house, asking what we are up to. Bob proceeds to tell her, and her response was something like "Oh, I've always wanted to do that!" So, we hand her an egg, and she leans against the wall as we wait for the sound of a car to come down the hill. Just at the "right" moment, she tosses the egg grenade. We hear the sound of a splat, followed immediately by the sound of screeching brakes. It was a cop!! Boy, did Mrs Deeble get yelled at by one of Mountain Lakes's finest. I don't recall much fun outside that night The short term memory is the first to go, so if you prod me...I can come up with quite a few more memories from the old days. Hi John Great Idea! Just came back from Mt Lakes. Hadn't been back since 1973. Went to my aunt's 90 year celebration. We drove across country with our two remaining kids and my son from Fla drove up. Big reunion time. I hadn't seen my father or brothers and sister since 1979. My mother died last year. Dad didn't want me to travel all that way for that. Cruised Mt Lakes and saw the old schools and neighborhoods. Fabulous. I wouldn't leave Montana for the world but if I did, Mt Lakes would be the place. Met Bill Cronheim again, we were high school sweethears, and went to see him at his fabulous home in Newton, NJ. I had a blast from the past. Will try to get hold of Patti MacEwen soon have been very busy with my work. Andrea

It must have been Third Grade. I was walking with Dennis Waldron to his house for lunch. There were no free lunch at school in those days. We walked up Lake Drive and there was Catelleci directing traffic on the Boulevard. As we were waiting to cross, Dennis whispers to me "everyone call this guy "Fishface". After about five minutes, Catelleci stops the traffic and we start to cross. As we drew even with him, I, being the nice, polite, easy going kid that I was, turned to Sgt Catelleci and said "Hiya Fishface, how are you doing? Time seemed to freeze for a minute and everything seemed to move in slow motion. I was probably three feet tall and he seemed to be fifteen...face black as thunder..those thick horn rimed glasses...beady little eyes...slobber driping from his mouth..and probably bad breath. In a rude, unkind manner he told me to wait on the corner as he had several things that he wanted to say to me. I also had to tell my mother what I have done. After he had finished, I walked over to Dennis who had a horrified look on his face and promptly told me that "no one says that to his face!". I'm still a nice, polite easy going guy, but I have gotten a little smarter.

Gee Tom, who was Dottie Swec?? Damn, and all that time I was day dreaming about you....anyway, would love to know what you're up to these days. I'm still in the metro NY area, married with a 16 year old son, and still agonizing over doing/not doing art. Never being much of a carrer sort, I lived through much of the 80's in a Zen Monastery. Also lived a few years in the mountains of western NC (Food stamp administrater...first marriage...fiddle contests, get the picture?) More recently I struggled with caring for my mother through 16 months of pancreatic cancer while trying in vain to keep tabs on a son whose idea of a good time was to score for pot on 8th St. in full view of the police (at the age of 14). So now I'm taking a good long break, gardening for myself and professionally. But part time - my back can't take more than that! I haven't been to a reunion, but may attend next year. Is Sue Gherke out there somewhere?

First Love Dottie Swec caught my heart and held it tight for thirty years. I used to walk up to her house on Powerview Road and just stare at it, hours on end, every Saturday, PRAYING that she'd come out. She never did and I'd forlornly wander back home, craving her. One day, after months of this maddness, I was lying in the middle of the road, drunk with wanting her, half mad, and she appeared, looking down at me, asking why I was lying in the middle of the road. I told her...nothing!....I couldn't think of anything to say! so she shrugged and walked away--that's the sum total of my time with her! My heart breaks even as I think of her, Dottie...!!!

Hi Guys! What a great web-site! Did you read the history part yet? I just learned more about Mt. Lakes in 10 minutes by reading it than I did from all the years I lived there. But where is this fantastic sled run on Tower Hill they talk about? Curses - I never knew about it. However, I do remember Hal Haydock smacking his front tooth while sledding down our front lawn on Laurel Hill Rd. Lots of blood - the rest of us were very impressed. Sounds terrific!! We'll be there! Should we bring the Boston Pops or just the cannons for the 1812? How about a lot of kazoos for a stirring rendition of Stars and Stripes Forever? Can't wait!

Excellent. I'd really like to come. Hope I can. But if Bobby Ougeltree would bring his copy of 'Help Me Rhonda', that would make a trip across the ocean a no brainer.
